Unit 7

I was not real pleased with this week’s meditative practice. This reminded me of talking to or allowing familiar spirits to guide you. So the scriptures that I remembered from the Bible came to mind.

Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:31

Isaiah 8:19 When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

I can pray to my God and I do not need to bring to mind or make up someone to guide me, such as the wise one.

The saying from p 477 of our text, Consciousness and healing, “One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself”. This is a two fold saying when applying to the health and wellness professional. A health and wellness professional is one that is to help their clients though different stages of their lives. If a health and wellness professional has not gone though this stage of live they may have a different outlook on the problem or if they have never dealt with a death that was very close to them, the professional may be at a lose. Also the professional is to be able to help, so they would need to have an insight of how to help. You as a health and wellness professional has an obligation  to develop your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually.

  1. Hi Mary. I agree with you here in regard to how prayer differs from this particular meditative exercise. Prayer and our connection to God or a higher being is "there" within us or around us, like you said, without having to summon ourselves or our mind. It might be a nice idea, I think to be able to have that time to pray, but realistically, when we feel that spiritual connection, we are going through our day and experiences and struggles. That is just my opinion.

  2. Mary, I can understand your views on this subject and I respect your beliefs. However, I don't think this exercise is the same as praying or even idolizing that person. Instead, I see it more as paying respect to your elders. These practices are not meant to disrespect anyone's religion and they don't indicate anything involving contacting spirits. It actually resorts to that "loving-kindness" that we've learned here in class and connecting to everyone. Just that in this case, it's focusing on one specific person in that loving-kindness mindset. That's just my opinion.
